So I’m in Hardwick, Vermont, doing this thing. The above is the view out the front of my motel, more or less. To be honest, calling the place I’m stuck in right now a, “Shit hole,” would be to needlessly elevate its status. Hardwick is one of those towns in an area hard hit by the recession. More than half this town is boarded shut and the stink of despair lies pretty heavy over everything. There is stimulus money that has been sunk into this place and I think it is making a small difference buy Vermont, very much has a similar feel to West Virginia for me. Of course this time I’m not on my bike.
But there are many instances of urban decay to shoot. My main problem has been available light. Night comes early to this narrow valley and I’m constantly working at higher ISO (6400) which has issues of its own, even with high ISO noise suppression.
Still the situation does allow you to play a bit more with light.
Which brings us to a bit of weirdness. There’s a fuel stand well out the back of the nearby gas station. It’s for off road fuel, which I’m guessing is tax exempt here in Vermont. I just really dig the combination of elements and so here’s a photo series of the pump.
I’ll be down here for a couple more weeks. As I get more of a feel for the area, I’ll post more stuff up.
