Here’s somebody having a bad day or is it? In reality it’s an actor giving a director what he wants. Well for this take anyway.
One of the things I like about the process of writing is the act of discovery. The outline at least as far as how I like to outline is the spine of the plot of the story. It may be detailed but for the most part it’s pretty loose in regards to interpretation. I only know these characters so well, I’m going to discover a lot more about them as we go on.
There’s also that key moment where you realize what part of you is being tapped into. My current spec it’s pretty obvious it’s the anger you feel when other forces make decisions that greatly effect your life with no input or consideration for how it will impact you. We feel this when we’re passed over for promotion or whenever the government feels the need to impose another tax or in the worst of cases, when the oncoming car swerves into our lane.
Lives changed forever in the blink of an eye or the stroke of a pen.
My current story asks, what would you do if you met that person on your turf, years later? How far would you take your revenge? Is it really as cut and dried, black and white as you think it is?
And in that question, I start to discover my characters. Because when you put them in the pressure cooker you really get to see what they’re made of. What you might have first envisioned for them, is rarely the way they come out the other side, which I find fascinating.
Have a good week.
